Lots of people will feel entitled to teach you a lesson. Many of them have built their lives on compromise, often at the cost of their true happiness. These same people want to make their problem your problem. They want you to feel bad for resisting the grain and sticking to your individuality, instead of taking all the crap they throw at you and letting it mold you into the same shape, color, and size as everyone else.
Maybe they enjoy their lives being copy-pasted onto every other family they see on Facebook. Maybe they enjoy the monotony of hearing "horror stories" but never having to roll around in the dirt with anyone. Maybe they're afraid they're not good enough, and the only way to survive in a harsh world is to camouflage and hide in plain sight. Honestly, none of that matters to me.
I refuse to live that way. I won’t change who I am to be more palatable to strangers. I won’t build the story of my life based on feedback from my biggest haters. I won’t sacrifice all the things that bring joy into my life to make their lives feel fuller or more vibrant. That's not my job.
And it's not your job either. You are free to pursue what fills your cup. There will always be people who try to bitter your Kool-Aid, but that's only because theirs is just water with food coloring. It’s not real, and they miss the taste of something sweet. That sucks for them. Don’t give it to them. Drink up. It tastes that good because you made it yourself.
